Mākoura College to Launch New Te Reo Māori Radio Station

 NEWS

Mākoura College is gearing up to launch a brand-new Te Reo Māori radio station, expanding opportunities for students to communicate directly with their community in te reo. The yet-to-be-named station will broadcast on 106.9FM, with plans to eventually stream online.

The station will serve as a sister station to the college’s existing 88.1 Hit Student Radio and will feature a mix of Māori music from contemporary artists, along with student-produced content, including news, weather reports, interviews, and Vox Pops. Future plans include student-led radio shows, all in te reo Māori, giving students a platform to develop their broadcasting skills and celebrate their culture.

Media Studies teacher Andrew Hutchby says the initiative is an exciting development for the school. "Enabling students to express themselves is important, and this new station is another way we can support our ākonga at Mākoura."

Stay tuned for updates, including the station’s official name and launch date!
